Update

Hi to you all!!

As you know, I haven't been able to work on my blog for quite a while, although I have tried to answer your questions for the last few days. Before long, I thought I might ask you this question. It might help me orient the direction of this blog. Maybe, it might be helpful to know what kind of lessons or resources I need to provide to you who are eager to learn Korean! :)

The questions are:
What is the reason for studying Korean?
What made you start studying Korean?
Why do you want to learn Korean?

Basically, the motivation or reasons for learning Korean?
And btw, all the best with learning the language!

  6. I met a Korean lady who stole my heart and now I would love to learn to speak the language of her family. This is a great motivator and has spurred me to learn tons in a short time.

Thanks for your blog and keep it going.

  7. My reason for studying Korean is because I really enjoy learning new languages, and I find every aspect of Korean culture fascinating. I love Korean food, people, music, etc. I started learning Korean when my cousin (who lives in a Korean majority neighborhood) was watching a "Dong Yi" and showed me kpop. The moment she showed me all of that I became intrigued immediately.

I plan to major in Asian studies when I grow up, so learning Korean would be amazing. Moreover, I want to move to Korea so learning Korean would be great.

Overall my motivations: Kpop, Korean people, food, life, customs, history, and Kdramas

  8. What is the reason for studying Korean?
--> To be able to watch K-shows without relying on subtitles. It's frustrating that i need to wait almost 6months or longer to watch a fully-subbed show. Sometimes because the show is not popular, there won't be anyone subbing it too.

What made you start studying Korean?
--> SNSD's Taeyeon. She told me to study hard for it. Lol~

Well, my main target is to be able to listen and converse in basic daily conversation and NOT up to the standard of writing Korean essays.

  9. I am quite interested in languages, and I wanted to learn another language that I liked (I learnt english because of school, so I wanted to choose a language that I liked).

Also, i do have some korean friends living in korea that made me interested in the language.

  10. I started becoming interested in Korean when I met some Korean exchange students in college and one of them started teaching me some basic Korean. I have always loved learning languages and seeing how they're related to one another in some way no matter how different they may seem. Korean is the first language that I am trying to learn on my own with no formal instruction so even though it's more challenging, it actually motivates me more because I feel that any progress that I make is solely the result of my efforts and hard work.

  12. I live in Brisbane, Australia and over the last 5 or so years there has been a massive influx of Koreans into our city. I think mainly to learn English and a lot come out here to learn / work on a one year holiday visa. I started meeting a lot of Koreans and have even lived with a few so it made sense to start learning their language.

Oh and of course Starcraft. ;)

  14. Hi Luke. I've been coming to your blog for a while now and I just want to tell you thank you! Around 2005, I had the interest to learn korean because I'd heard a song by a Korean artist (SE7EN) and I was already learning Japanese so I thought I'd give Korean a try too. Unfortunately during 2005 there was hardly ANY korean grammar sites so I never go too far. Recently I've attempted to start back again so I just wanted to thank you. Now there are a little more useful Korean grammar websites, but this one continues to be one of the best!

    To answer your questions
My reason for studying Korean goes back to a class I had last semester. We were focusing on East Asia and my professor got so into discussing China and Japan that we never had much time to study Korean and it got me thinking about how people prefer to study/learn Chinese and Japanese but you hardly hear about anyone studying Korean. All of this actually motivated me to want to study abroad in Korea next semester to learn about the culture and history so this is why I'm learning Korean.

The above goes to the second question too, but also because I hard how similar Korean and Japanese's grammar are.

I want to learn Korean because I hardly know anyone who has actually studied it (I mainly hear of people studying chinese and japanese) and it makes me interested as to why more people don't study it. So i'm studying it to kinda discover the language. Plus I like learning new languages, I like challenging myself, and so far Korean has been a really fun challenge. Plus, I getting into the music/ dramas and it's always fun to know what they're saying.

Thanks again for the blog! This really helps out alot

  15. Thanks, Belinda, for your comment! I hope you continue to make progress and yeah, learning a language can be a challenge but I think it's rewarding at the end because it means we have just enlarged the potential circle of friends with whom we can commnunicate. :)

    All the best!!

  17. Hi Tracy,

Thanks a lot for your reply!
Certainly, it seems that culturally, China and Japan are more exposed to the mainline media around the world.

But recently, through the Korean cultural influence, more people become aware of the language, culture and people of Korea.

Hope that you'd make good progress in becoming accustomed to Korean language, culture and people.

    All the best! :)

  18. Hi Anonymous

It seems that the Korean dramas, music and other cultural influence + Korean friends, and people around your areas play a big part in motivating you to study Korean.

    Cheers for your comment :)

  19. at first I wanted to learn Korean because I like listening to kpop and I want to know what the kpop idols are singing instead of reading the translation.
but now I just want to learn it cause I love the sound of different languages and I hope to know a lot of asian languages cause I love how they sound (music, dramas, etc.)

  20. Living in Japan for a few years, I have many korean friends learning Japanese with me. They are often speaking korean (obviously) together.
So I'd like to try to speak korean, and knowing the grammar is a bit like Japanese made me start to study Korean.
And a last thing, the fact there are no Kanji.. is really great haha
(thank you for that very nice grammar guide)

  21. I love everything about korea; the people, the music, the dramas, the language, and of course the food, so I'm definitely going to move there after college! Therefore, I need to learn korean, but it's not a need, it's a want. I also like learning lots of other languages ^__^

  23. I study Korean because I want to be able to understand the music and TV shows, and I also want to be able to talk with my foreign friends.

  24. To Anonymous, Jujuo, Anonymous and 티아나,

Thanks a lot for your comments! :)

    To Rino,

공부해요 and 공부합니다 mean the same, I study (or I'm studying).

해요 is a polite spoken form, and 합니다 is a polite written form.

  25. Same here...mainly watching Korean Dramas day in and day out made me want to learn and understand the language more, it would be awesome if I could understand dramas without subtitles haha...

But yeah, I'd love it if I could converse well in another language other than English!
It has also, in a way, helped me understand the English language more too. So that's great :D
It's quite enjoyable learning something you want to haha

  28. Hi Luke,
I just want to speak comfortably with my Korean friends. At times I felt awkward when they tried to explain in English but having directly translated words from Korean. ^^

  29. I have l lot of reasons.
i like watching Korean dramas and some of them that have caught my eyes recently are not subbed in English, therefore i've decided to learn Korean to understand what is being said.
I'd also like to go to Korea some time in the future and it'd be really unfortunate if i couldn't talk to anyone just because i don't know the language.
Lastly i think Korean language is really something else with it's levels of polite speech. To talk differently to someone according to his age, status, work experience etc. is really complicated but also very interesting. I like the fact that respect is seen it the language itself to such an extent. That also motivated me to learn the language. I also have to say that the vowels and consonants look really pretty, not like letters in my language.

  30. I have a passion for learning, especially when it comes to languages.
I am in contact with many Koreans and would like to be able to converse i their language. Most countries learn English (and more) but Americans may only faintly attempt 1 language. Also, a majority choose Chinese and Japanese; Korean is different. K-dramas, K-pop, culture, customs, respects, ideas, and technology are also reasons I'd like to learn. Planning on immigrating/dual citizenship one day.
